A Quare Name But Great Stuff
INNATE seminar, 6th March: Peace movement over the hill - setting new horizons

As Northern Ireland moves on, in whatever way and however falteringly, from the last thirty years of the Troubles, peace, nonviolence and civil society groups have many questions to ask. Some of these relate to the past; what did we do and how did we do it? Did it make any difference? Other questions relate to the future; if the situation is changing, what emphasis is necessary for the years to come? What have we not been involved in that we might now have the opportunity of doing something about?

Among those sharing their personal views will be Ann McCann, Tanya Gallagher and Derick Wilson. Those attending are welcome to bring materials to display about work over the last thirty years. There will be a choice of afternoon workshops, focused on the future:

  1. Wider world issues
  2. Community relations and anti-sectarianism
  3. Political action on justice, rights, marginalisation and other issues.

The booking fee for the day, including lunch, is £5 waged/£3 unwaged. The day runs from 10 am - 4.15pm. Booking forms [included for most people receiving this as a mailing] and further information are available from INNATE at 16 Ravensdene Park, Belfast BT6 0DA, Tel: /Fax: 01232 - 647106.

An Crann/The Tree
Two new full-time staff members were appointed at the end of last year, Cathie McKimm (Project Director) and Averill Buchanan (Administration and Information Officer).

A range of events are being drawn up including co-hosting in late February Prof Dan Bar-On, a psychologist from the University of the Negev, Israel where he is Chair of a new Centre for Dialogue Between Populations in Conflict. He will be giving talks and workshops on Approaches to Healing in both Londonderry/ Derry and Belfast and meeting Minister for Victims and Security, Adam Ingram.

As part of the ongoing work of helping the people of Northern Ireland tell and hear the stories of the Troubles, An Crann is actively seeking to make contact with community and church groups etc. who might be interested in doing workshops with us.

If you are interested in getting involved in this way, or would simply like to find out more about how you can make your own personal contribution to the Story of the Troubles, contact Cathie or Averill at the An Crann offices, 10 Arthur Street, Belfast BT1 4GD (Tel: 01232 - 240209).

Theatre and The Peace Process
Sole Purpose productions, based in Derry Londonderry, have been touring two plays by Academy Award nominated writer Dave Duggan for the past two years as a theatrical contribution to the peace process.

The Shopper and the Boy deals with the contentious issue of marching and Without the Walls takes policing as its subject. Both are suitable for non-theatre venues, such as community centres etc, and can be used to promote discussion and dramatic activity on the topics. A tour and residency of the Ards Peninsula is taking place, and plans for more work in North Down and a new play dealing with prisoners and victims.

Sole Purpose Productions may be contacted for more information or to arrange bookings at The Playhouse, Artillery Street, Derry Londonderry BT48 6RG, or Tel: Pat Byrne 01504 - 360271 or Dave Duggan 01504 - 271126.

Nonviolence Networking Bosnia (From Belfast To Sarajevo)
Belfast woman Cara Gibney, working in Sarajevo since November, writes:

'Centar za nenasilnu akciju - the Centre for Nonviolent Action (CNA) where I work is a project office of the Centre for Education and Networking in Nonviolent Action - KURVE Wustrow. It started in September 1997, the main objectives are training in nonviolent conflict resolution/transformation, networking and advisory activities. CNA is based in Sarajevo and works all over Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH). People from various countries of the former Yugoslavia have participated in ethnically mixed training events. The work is aimed at supporting and inducing local training structures in the field of nonviolent conflict resolution; the aim is to hand over CNA to local people by mid-2000; it is not important whether or not a 'CNA' office continues but we are aiming towards a continuation and multiplication of the work CNA is presently doing - CNA could continue, staffed by locals, or an established network of trainers from BiH could continue the work. Staffing is currently one local person from Sarajevo, one person originally from Belgrade and one international from Belfast.'

Address: Bentbasa 31, 71000 Sarajevo, Bosnia | Herzegovina. Tel:/Fax: +387 71 - 442 011.
