Not Being Taken For A Fluoride
Campaigning against fluoridation of water has probably been more vocal and successful in Northern Ireland than in the Republic. Now VOICE has produced a leaflet (A3 folded) on 'The facts about Fluoridation' and is starting a campaign on the issue to repeal the 1960 Water Fluoridation Act. As their Newsletter (May issue) says, less than 2% of Europe drinks fluoridated water and "The fluoride added to Irish drinking water is toxic waste from the Dutch fertiliser industry, although the Dutch banned fluoridation in 1976… fluoridation is linked to osteoporosis, arthritis, hip fractures, Alzheimer’s, genetic damage, depressed thyroid function, immune system damage, infant mortality, bone cancer and lowered IQ. Yet no research has been done in Ireland looking at the relationship between over 30 years of fluoridation and these diseases." ICCL - Irish Council for Civil Liberties
The keynote talks at the ICCL AGM on 22nd May were from Brian Burdekin, special advisor to UNHCHR, and Brice Dickson, chief commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Brice Dickson concluded "by underlining the necessity for the Northern Commission and the Republic's Commission to be user-friendly and to get out there on the ground… the clear message we are getting from people is that they want us to work on things like the rights of disabled people, the rights of carers, the rights of the homeless, the rights of children to a certain kind of education, an education which they and their parents want, not one imposed by the state." Meanwhile Donncha O'Connell , who has an academic background and published widely in the field of human rights law, has joined ICCL as Director, joining Judy Walsh, Executive Secretary and Shivaun Quinlivan, Administrative Assistant. Subscriptions; £15, joint £22, unwaged £5. Address now; ICCL, Dominick Court, 40-41 Lower Dominick Street, Dublin 1. Tel: 01- 878 3136, Fax: 878 3109, Web http://www.iol.ie/~iccl/

Peace News Quarterly + new British monthly
Peace News
first quarterly issue is very appropriately on Law, War and Disobedience - a 52 page issue which appeared in May, the topic chosen to coincide with the Hague Appeal for Peace conference. Plenty of material to get your teeth into there. With a cover price of £2.50, the subscription in the UK is £10 minimum, £15 elsewhere in Europe. Peace News, 5 Caledonian Road, London N1 9DY.

Meanwhile from the same stable (not only that, neigh, but from the same address) comes a British monthly publication, Nonviolent Action, which is available for £5 a year (though Peace News subscribers in Britain are promised Nonviolent Action in the months Peace News is produced). If subscribing to both in the UK at the one time you can do it for £13 minimum. Nice little piece in Nonviolent Action listing the (19) countries bombed by the USA since the end of World War II asks in how many instances did a democratic government, respectful of human rights, occur as a result, and you're given a choice of different versions of zero.

Reviews:

'People Building Peace' - 35 inspiring stories from around the world
It is difficult to summarise this 411 page book because it is so broad ranging, not just in geographical spread of contributors and areas dealt with, but also in its coverage (governments, NGOs, churches, women, media, education, arts, sports, the corporate sector, donors and reconciliation are all covered). Norn Iron gets a good look in (including Mari Fitzduff on the broad peace process and Petesy Burns on the arts' contribution to peace in NI). Over a hundred pages are reflections/analysis including JP Lederach, Hizkias Assefa, Michelle Parlevliet, George Berthoin, Kumar Rupesinghe, Louise Diamond, Paul van Tongeren etc. And don't be put off by the 'inspiring' adjective in the sub-title which might indicate a sentimental approach; you may well be inspired but this book has its feet on the ground, all over the place, in the around twenty countries covered. It is a publication of the European Centre for Conflict Prevention [PO Box 14069, 3508 SC Utrecht, Netherlands] in cooperation with IFOR/International Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Coexistence Initiative of the State of the World Forum. ISBN 90 57 27 029 3 The book will be available from the CRC Information Centre in Belfast, priced £10 (+ postage where applicable), at 21 College Square East, BT1 6DE, Tel: 01232 - 311881, Fax: 244364.

'EMU - The Games Book'
by Jerry Tyrrell, Brendan Hartop and Seamus Farrell.
It may be true that there are no new games under the sun but if you have five minutes to spare in a workshop or lesson you can be sure that "at that point your mind goes blank, and the four or forty games that you know seem to be deleted from your memory?" It is designed for working with children, its origin as a resource to accompany their Peer Mediation Manual; some would be suitable for any age group. These EMUlating games (!) are divided into workshop games (16), filler games for small gaps (7), filler games for large groups (3), and games for promoting ground rules (2) and is well illustrated with photos. ISBN 0 9535389 0 7. 68 pages A5, available at £5 (+ post) from the EMU Promoting School Project, Magee College, Northland Road, L'Derry BT48 7JL, Tel: 01504- 375225, Fax: 375550.
