Moving Beyond Sectarianism
Northern Ireland's own indigenous form of prejudice and discrimination, sectarianism, is something which is frequently talked about in others but rarely admitted by anyone themselves. Two very attractively produced resources are just out (one for use with adults, the other for young adults either in youth groups or at school) from the Moving Beyond Sectarianism Project of the Irish School of Ecumenics. Both are attractively presented in full colour in loose leaf format, "A Resource for Adult Education" by Craig Sands weighs in at 214 pages (A4) while "A Resource for Young Adults - Youth and School" by Yvonne Naylor is 166 pages. They include definitions, exercises, ideas, and resources etc. and they look at history, background, structure and the religious element in sectarianism in useful ways and the dynamics involved. The other unusual thing is that these resource materials have appeared before the book on which they are based, Cecelia Clegg and Joe Liechty's 'Moving Beyond Sectarianism' to be published shortly by Columba Press and so, as well as being valuable resources in their own right act as a trailer for the book. With slightly different orientations there is overlap between the two; folders are available at £20 each (plus £5 post and packaging) from Irish School of Ecumenics, 48 Elmwood Avenue, Belfast BT9 6AZ, ph/fax 028 (048 from Republic) 90 38 27 50, e-mail ecumenics@irishschool.demon.co.uk and website www.iol.ie/~ise
